Set Visibility Restrictions for Grade Categories and Items

You can set visibility restrictions for grade categories and items that control when the categories and items are visible in students’ Grades view. However, categories or items with visibility restrictions will still be included in the final grade calculations unless you also follow steps to Exclude a Grade Category or Item from the Final Grade Calculation.


Important: Setting visibility restrictions for grade categories and items only controls their visibility to students. For most instances, we advise against using this unless you have an assignment like a pop quiz that the students will not need to know about yet. For typical grade items listed in the syllabus, it’s advised to make them visible for the duration of the quiz. Date restrictions for content or activities can be set directly on those items. Setting start/end and due dates for course components associated with grade items, such as Content, Assignments, Discussions, or Quizzes, is handled from within the respective tool.


Set Visibility of a Grade Item or Grade Category from the Grades Tool

  1. On the nav bar, click the Assessment menu, then select Grades.

  2. Click to select the Manage Grades area, then from the context menu of the grade item or grade category you want to set the visibility of, select Hide from Users to hide the grade item or grade category. The grade item/category will display the Hidden icon in the Grades tool.

  3. To unhide the grade item/category, from the context menu select Make Visible to Users.

Set Visibility of Multiple Grade Items or Categories

  1. On the nav bar, click the Activities menu, then select Grades.

  2. Click to select the Manage Grades area, then check the box next to each grade category or item for which you wish to change the visibility. Then click the More Actions button. Select either Make Visible to Users or Hide from Users.

Set Visibility While Editing a Grade Item or Category

  1. On the nav bar, click the Assessment menu, then select Grades.

  2. In the Manage Grades area, click on the category or item you want to hide.

  3. In the Restrictions tab, select Grade item is visible for a specific date range in the Visibility area and enter your date restrictions.

  4. Click Save and Close.
  5. Verify that the categories or items have a restriction in the Manage Grades area by looking for the closed eye with a timer icon next to the category or item you have hidden.

Remove Visibility Restrictions

To remove visibility restrictions from categories or items, return to the restrictions tab of the hidden category or item and select Grade item is always visible. Then click Save and Close.
