Below you will find notes about the common changes and fixes for courses migrated from eCollege into TCU Online. Read this page to become familiar for what to look for in your migrated course, as well as tips and videos to assist you.

Find the full list of D2L video tutorials here.

Blank Content

In cases where we found blank content in TCU Online shells, we verified in eCollege too, that there was blank content there too. If no content came over from eCollege, it was because there was no content listed in shell you requested to be migrated. If there was content in eCollege we attempted to rebuild the content in TCU Online to match. Check your eCollege shell if content appears to be missing in TCU Online.

Course Home

You may see an item titled Course Home under the Table of Contents in your TCU Online shell. This module was copied from selected eCollege shells and holds all the content items found under Course Home in eCollege. This is a placeholder of content only. You should consider renaming this module, moving the course content to another module, or deleting it if it does not fit with your course organization. Course Home in TCU Online is the landing page when you select your course.

The top area currently called “Overview” will be the best location to attach your syllabus and add welcome message for your class.

Dropbox (called Assignments starting summer 2016)

In eCollege you used the Dropbox. Dropboxes work differently in TCU Online. In TCU Online, you have the option to keep all Dropbox Baskets in the Dropbox; you no longer are required to create course content to create a Dropbox Basket. We’ve created Dropboxes to match your eCollege layout.

Please watch the video at this link to learn about the Dropbox Tool and information you need regarding grading, points, groups, and restrictions.

Dropbox Errors

The Koehler Center Team has found that some Dropboxes are not permitting descriptions changes. To fix this issue when we were resolving other errors that came over, we had to set some dropbox scores to 1. Please review the point value of your Dropboxes.

If you encounter an error when trying to edit a Dropbox, use the link below.

Please watch the video at the link to learn how to fix this error.

Gradebook

The grade book does NOT come over from eCollege.  There are more robust features in the TCU Online Grades tool.  Faculty must setup their grade book.

Groups

In eCollege you used the Group Tool. This tool does not migrate into TCU Online, but it is easy to make new groups with additional features not found in eCollege. You will need to recreate your groups, or you can create you groups in a live course shell you use during a semester.

Please watch the video at this link to learn how to create groups in TCU Online.

Hidden Content

In eCollege you had the option to “hide” content from students. In TCU Online, there isn’t a hide option like in eCollege. Instead, TCU Online that allows you to change a module or content items to “Draft.” If a Module or content items is listed as “Draft” instead of “Published,” students will not be able to view that Module or Content. Faculty can see the module or content, and it will be listed as “Draft” to remind the faculty that content or module is not visible to students.

Please watch the video at this link to learn how to publish a module or content or how to keep it in Draft mode.

Iframe used in eCollege for URL and Audio/Video files (not YouTube)

In eCollege you could create an iframe using the Text/Multimedia content type that would open within the page. In TCU Online, the iframe must be from a secure server, HTTPS, in order for the content the iframe is referencing to work.  If you link to a URL, Video, or Audio from a website that is not secure, HTTPS, it is a browser issue with security.

You can link to the URL or files using the link tool instead of using iframe.

Please read this Brightspace D2L Community Article for more information about blocking and browser changes for secure pages.

Links in the HTML Editor

When using the HTML Editor, there are different linking options.

Tool Links: If you linked to course tools or other (like dropboxes or discussion threads) in eCollege, those links do not work in TCU Online because they still point back to the tool in eCollege. You will need to clean up these broken links in TCU Online.  If you want to continue to navigate students to content or tools in TCU Online you will need to update the links. Watch the video below to learn how link to Tools.

Quizzes

If you use online Quizzes in your course, be sure to review each quiz and more specifically each question/answer. It is possible that revisions will need to be made.  It is always best practice before replying a quiz to review point values for each question, schedule the quiz and set it up in the grades tool.  More information about quizzes is below:

Syllabus

The syllabus tool in eCollege does not have an equivalent in D2L; however, if you uploaded a Word document into the syllabus tool, you will find a copy of the Word document you used in the Manage Files area of your course. The files are listed alphabetically.
